Getting rid of old furniture in Northern Virginia sounds simple. It rarely is. Couches won't fit through doorways without disassembly. Mattresses need special disposal. Sectionals weigh 300 pounds and have to come down two flights of stairs. And half the time, the city bulk trash pickup won't come for three weeks.
This guide covers real furniture removal pricing — what each piece costs, what drives the price up, and what your options are. If you already know you need a pickup, text photos to (703) 828-7824 and we'll quote you within minutes.
Furniture Removal Pricing — 2026
We price furniture removal by the piece. Prices below include carrying the item from wherever it is in the home, loading, hauling, and disposal. The only add-on is a stair surcharge for second floor and above.
| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Loveseat / 2-seater sofa | $99–$119 | One-person carry for most moves |
| 3-seater sofa | $119–$139 | Two people required |
| Recliner | $119–$149 | Heavy mechanism, awkward shape |
| Sectional (L-shape) | $199–$239 | Disassembly included if needed |
| Sleeper sofa | $199–$239 | Very heavy — steel frame + mattress |
| Mattress — Twin / Full | $99 | Flat rate, any floor |
| Mattress — Queen | $125 | Flat rate, any floor |
| Mattress — King | $149 | Flat rate, any floor |
| Box spring | $99 | Any size |
| Bed frame | $99 | Standard frame — disassembled or whole |
| Dresser / chest of drawers | $99 | Drawers removed before moving |
| Dining table + chairs (set) | $149–$199 | Depends on size of set |
| Bookshelf / shelving | $99 | Must be emptied first |
| Office desk | $99–$119 | L-shape desks priced as sectional |
| Coffee table / end table | $99 | Per piece |
| Exercise equipment | $99–$199 | Treadmill, elliptical, weight bench |
💡 Multiple pieces? If you have a full room — sofa, dresser, mattress, bed frame — we'll quote it as a load rather than piece-by-piece. A full room typically comes out cheaper that way. Text photos and we'll give you the better number.
What Drives the Cost Up
The prices above apply to standard first-floor or ground-floor removals with normal access. Here's what pushes the cost higher:
Stairs
Second floor and above adds $50. Basement carries up to the first floor also add $50. Third floor and above adds $75. Most Northern Virginia townhouses have bedrooms on the second or third floor — the stair surcharge applies to most bedroom furniture jobs in Herndon, Reston, Chantilly, and Centreville.
Heavy or Oversized Pieces
Sleeper sofas can weigh 200–350 lbs. Large sectionals sometimes need two people just to lift one section. These take more time and labor, which is why the price range is wider for these items. If you're not sure, text a photo — we can usually tell from the picture.
Tight Access
Narrow hallways, tight stair turns, low ceilings, and doorways that won't fit a sofa whole — these slow the job down significantly. If disassembly is needed but not straightforward (e.g., a sectional with a built-in mechanism), we'll let you know before we start. Standard disassembly is included in the price.
Volume
If you have more than a few pieces, the load-based price often applies. A full bedroom set (mattress, box spring, frame, dresser, two nightstands) fills about 2/8 of a trailer. That runs $199–$299 — which is cheaper than pricing each piece individually.
Pest Issues
We can't take furniture with active bed bug or severe flea infestations. If there's any sign of pests, extermination must happen first. This protects other customers whose items may be in the trailer. If you're unsure, text photos and we'll assess.
Stairs — The Most Common Surprise
In Northern Virginia, most people don't think about stairs until the crew shows up. Here's exactly how it works:
| Situation | Surcharge |
|---|---|
| Ground floor / first floor with normal access | No surcharge |
| Second floor — standard staircase | +$50 |
| Basement carry up to first floor | +$50 |
| Third floor and above | +$75 |
| Very tight spiral staircase or unusually difficult carry | Quoted on-site |
| Condo with elevator — elevator coordination | No surcharge for standard elevators |
We tell you the stair charge before we carry anything. We don't surprise you after the item is already down the stairs.
Sectional Sofas — The Most Common Question
Sectionals are the piece we get the most questions about. Here's what to know:
Most sectionals come apart into two or three pieces. The L-shaped section disconnects from the main sofa body. This makes them easier to remove than they look — we take them apart on-site and carry each section separately.
Some sectionals have built-in recliners, built-in storage, or power mechanisms. These are heavier and sometimes need more creative disassembly. Still doable — just takes more time, which is why the price goes to the higher end of $239.
⚠️ If you have a modular sectional (many small pieces that clip together), text photos first. Some of these are very heavy per section and may require two people on the stairs.
Mattress Removal — What You Need to Know
Mattress disposal in Northern Virginia isn't as simple as putting it on the curb. Fairfax County charges a disposal fee for mattresses at the I-66 Transfer Station. Most municipalities won't take them as bulk trash unless they're bagged (which almost no one does).
We handle mattress disposal properly — no illegal dumping, no leaving it in a parking lot. The price is flat rate and includes disposal fees:
- Twin or Full: $99
- Queen: $125
- King: $149
- Box spring: $99 any size
If you have a mattress and box spring together, text photos — we'll often price it as a small load which may work out cheaper than individual pricing.
One important note: if the mattress has an active bed bug infestation, we can't take it. Extermination must happen first. Text photos if you're concerned — we can usually tell from a photo.
DIY vs Hiring a Pro — The Real Math
Can you get rid of furniture yourself? Yes. Is it worth it? It depends.
DIY options and what they actually involve:
- Facebook Marketplace / Craigslist: Free if someone takes it. But you're coordinating pickups with strangers, often multiple no-shows, and waiting days. Works great if the furniture is in good condition and you have time.
- Goodwill / Habitat ReStore: Free if they accept it. They reject furniture that's torn, stained, or heavily worn. You have to transport it yourself — renting a truck or van adds $50–$100.
- Fairfax County bulk pickup: Free but curbside only. Has to be scheduled in advance — often 1–2 weeks out. No basement or upper floor carries.
- Renting a truck and hauling it yourself: Truck rental $50–$100 + disposal fee at I-66 ($90/ton minimum, $36 minimum charge) + your time. A sofa and mattress costs you $100–$140 out of pocket plus several hours.
When hiring us makes sense: You need it gone this week (or today). The furniture is on an upper floor. You have multiple pieces. You don't have a truck. You value your Saturday afternoon.
Starting at $99 for a single piece with same-day service, the math works for most people.
What Happens to Your Furniture
We never dump illegally. Here's where your furniture actually goes:
- Donation: Items in good condition — structurally sound, no major stains, no pests — go to Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Herndon or Fairfax, or Salvation Army. We make the trip so you don't have to.
- Resale: Occasionally a piece has enough value that we can pass it along rather than dispose of it. This keeps it out of the landfill and keeps our disposal costs down.
- Fairfax County I-66 Transfer Station: Items too worn to donate go here. Licensed, legal disposal — $90/ton for general waste. Mattresses have a per-item surcharge here, which is included in our flat rates.
✅ We always try to donate before we dispose. If there's a specific item you'd like donated or handled a certain way, let us know before we start.
Furniture Removal by City — Northern Virginia
Pricing is the same across all cities. Here's what makes each area a little different:
Herndon & Reston
Townhouses dominate — most bedroom furniture involves second or third floor carries. McNair Farms, Countryside, Hunters Woods townhouses are the most common. Stair surcharge applies to most bedroom jobs. Same-day available throughout.
Fairfax & Burke
Large colonials with finished basements — basement carries are common. Full room sets from living room or bedroom renovations are typical. Great Falls Rd and Burke Centre most frequent. Good access, trailers pull close.
McLean & Great Falls
Larger homes, heavier furniture — sleeper sofas, sectionals, full dining room sets. Pieces purchased 20-30 years ago and never moved. Estate jobs common when homes change hands. Multi-piece loads frequent.
Arlington & Alexandria
Condos and apartments — elevator access for large items is standard. Building management coordination sometimes required. Single pieces and small loads most common. Old Town and Clarendon are frequent stops.
Vienna & Annandale
Mid-century ranches with low ceilings and narrow hallways — disassembly sometimes needed for sectionals and sleeper sofas. Text photos before booking so we can plan the carry route.
Centreville & Chantilly
Newer townhouses and single-family homes — great access, wide hallways. Less stair complexity than older homes. Same-day available for most jobs in this corridor. Route 29 and I-66 access makes scheduling easy.
Bethesda & Potomac MD
Larger older homes — full bedroom and living room sets common. Some estates. Maryland surcharge applies for trips outside Northern Virginia. Same-day available most days.
Washington DC
Row houses and condos. Parking coordination sometimes needed — we park in the nearest legal spot. Single pieces and apartment moves most common. Same-day available based on schedule.
